US currency banknotes used to be 7-1/2 inches by 3-1/8 inches. A standard Hollerith card is 7-3/8 inches wide by 3-1/4 inches. A bank check used to be the same size, as was a credit card charge slip, as was an airline ticket. Cash got counted by, and checks, charge slips, and airline tickets all got read and processed by the same kinds of machinery, and often were cross settled in the same clearinghouses on parallel and linked payment networks.
